Difference between Deep web and Dark Web

Many times you must have heard the words “Deep Web” and “Dark Web.” These terms are generally confused with each other & are misunderstood by many individuals. Let me explain these one at a time:

  • The deep web is the whole web that can’t be accessed & indexed by search engines like Google, Bing, Yandex, etc. The deep web includes private forums, chat groups, membership sites, Dark web websites, etc. In a nutshell, if I store some private files on iCloud or Dropbox then you cannot search them using Google. Hence it becomes a part of the Deep Web.
  • While Dark web is the “smaller” part of the deep web whose site addresses end with .onion.

Is the Dark web illegal or legal?

Long story short: the answer is YES it is legal to use TOR browser & hence the Dark web. You might also be surprised to know that the Tor project is supported & funded by the US Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Mozzila, and many other big companies and organizations. In the past, the Tor project has been funded by Google also. You can find here the complete list of sponsors. Also, the dark web is infamous for many illegal & unethical activities, yet these organizations support Tor, you may wonder why!! Let me explain this.

First of all, not all people are bad on the Dark web! Tor project was meant to be a place where people can discuss their problems, illness without being judged(by hiding their identities) and it could be a place of Free speech where everyone is free from the prying eyes of the government and other authorities. On the dark web, Doctors prescribe medicines to their patients to maintain complete privacy & anonymity. Only very few percentages of people are doing unethical things on Dark web. Hence to support the greater good these organizations support dark web. Always remember not all people are bad people, ONLY bad people are bad. Hence it is LEGAL in various countries. But like regular web, unethical sites not legal. You can also watch the following video to get more knowledge regarding this:
